If we could only share one thing with you about us it would be our zest and enthusiasm for life, in this beautiful country of South Africa.
 
Aside from that we're 'second-timers', having both been married before. We learned from the mistakes we made first time round, and are very much enjoying life together. Between us we've two married sons in Germany, a married daughter in England, and John, the youngest son, is enjoying his single life in Australia. Two lovely grand-daughters, and a handsome grand-son in Germany complete the family line-up at the moment. Kate and husband David, in England, say we should think of their dog as our grand-dog! Heide and I love being outdoors. In the garden we feel in touch with our Maker, and enjoy the marvels of all the life forms around us. Travelling's a passion, too. There's a great big world out there, and we want to experience it. We don't have a TV, so in the evenings Heide likes crossword puzzles, biographies, and historical books, while I've usually got my nose in a book on nutrition, business, or the internet. I'm developing our blog, and finding the new Web 2.0 developments really fascinating.
 
The best thing about having our own business is the freedom. We choose the hours we work; with whom we work, and when we go on holiday. We're also working together towards a common goal, which gives us a really great sense of combined achievement. Because we work from home, there's no travelling to the office, and that's a real boon. After a hard day, an hour in nose-to-tail traffic was stressful, and looking back, I can imagine how grumpy I must have been when I got home! The Monday-morning-blues and TGIF are gone, too. Now we greet each day with enthusiasm, knowing we're in control. Every day after breakfast, we take Roza, our Rottweiler, for a long walk, before going shopping, visiting friends, or working on our business - the choice is ours. Heide no longer has the stress of office politics, and I don't miss the stress of dental practise. I loved the clinical work, helping my patients, but am very pleased to be rid of the government interference and the mountains of paperwork that are part of modern professional practise.
 
For us, it all started when we were nearing our planned retirement date. When we retired from our professions, we knew we wouldn't want to rust in peace at the seaside. We wanted to do something to keep our minds and bodies active, at the same time continuing to make a worthwhile contribution to society. And we didn't want to downsize, spending the rest of our lives thinking of ways to tighten our belts. That would be no fun at all. But the figures in the pension brochures that looked really huge 40 years ago, now didn't seem so wonderful any more! We knew we had to do something to increase our annual income. Deciding to start our home business is one of the best decisions we've made. We're having lots of fun developing a valuable, worthwhile asset. Unlike the dental practice, we can leave the business to our children and grand-children one day, and that's a very satisfying thought, too.
